A globalised european and global level architecture
GÉANT is at the heart of Europe’s research and education networks.
Created 20 years ago by a consortium of national education and research networks including RENATER, GEANT deploys infrastructure that interconnects the European national networks including RENATER and provides the network links to the rest of the world.
GÉANT is now the largest and most advanced education and research network in the world. The GÉANT network has gradually grown to allow European researchers to be at the forefront of international collaboration. Currently, GÉANT operates connections of up to 500 Gbit/s, and is connected to over 100 regional and national networks worldwide.
Over 1,000 terabytes of data are transferred daily using the GÉANT IP backbone.
Through its integrated connectivity, collaboration and identity service catalogue, GÉANT provides highly reliable, constraint-free access to computing, analysis, storage, applications and other resources, to keep Europe at the forefront of research.
As an e-infrastructure in Europe, GEANT is co-financed by the European Commission. Its members are involved in projects to deploy and interconnect research and education networks in the Mediterranean, Africa and Central Asia, as well as in North America, the Caribbean and the Asia-Pacific region. It coordinates Europe-China collaboration and has relations with its Latin American counterparts.
